I will reinstall Debian on my iBook and tell you what is the outcome.
Since I only have 8MB of VRAM, I will have to live with 16 bit colors,
which is not a problem to me, as it has the side-effect of being
slightly faster.
I would like to get compiz working, but I think that it is too much to
ask. :-)

Ah, thanks. Xv is indeed quite important for the applications that I
have in mind. If only this iBook's G3 had a bit more power... :-(
