I use openntpd wherever I can, because it is "automatic" and doesn't
need this "by hand" that you mention.

I have an iBook G3, 600 MHz, combo, late 2001 and it is reliable on the
clock. Perhaps it is the ntpd that I'm running? With MacOS X I also had
good results, even sleeping, waking up and repeating this cycle.
