Xorg won't start on a PowerMac 9600 (ATI Mach64)

Hello all,
I installed Etch (4.0) on a PowerMac 9600/300 (Old World). The machine boots fine, but I don't seem to be able to get the X server to start. The 9600 has an ATI Mach64 PCI video card, and a Sony 17" monitor connected to it by means of a Mac-VGA adapter. The adapter is set to a fixed resolution of 1152x870 (but see below).

With the auto-generated Xorg.conf I get this error:

(II) ATI: Candidate "Device" section "ATI Technologies Inc 210888GX [Mach64 GX]". (II) ATI: Shared PCI Mach64 in slot 0:13:0 with Block 0 base 0x817FFC00 detected. (II) ATI: Shared PCI Mach64 in slot 0:13:0 assigned to active "Device" section "ATI Technologies Inc 210888GX [Mach64 GX]".

(II) LoadModule: "atimisc"

(II) Module atimisc: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
	compiled for 7.1.1, module version = 6.6.3
	Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 1.0
(II) resource ranges after probing:

(==) ATI(0): Chipset:  "ati".
(EE) ATI(0): Driver can't support depth 24
(II) UnloadModule: "ati"
(II) UnloadModule: "atimisc"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/atimisc_drv.so
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

If I change the DefaultDepth parameter in the Screens section of Xorg.conf to 16 or 15, I get:

Depht 15|16 cannot be used with this adapter

With DefaultDepth set to 8 (which seems to be the default for this ATI driver), or commented out altogether, I get:

Linear aperture not available

I have no idea what this last error means. I also tried to change the settings on the Mac-VGA adapter, but I got the exact same errors. So, I'm stuck here. Anybody can give me a clue? Or, better yet, a working Xorg.conf? :-)

Thanks in advance,
Damiano
