Also, for NVidia chips, we haven't yet found out for sure how to detect the maximum value allowed (I was the one rewriting the backlight infrastructure in 2.6.18). Hence it might be that, when using an NVidia chipset, the display is not that bright as in Mac OS X. And anyway, this is in no way distribution specific.
