possibly boot hangs refers to other devices ???

hi,

i have to be honest all is not rosy either with my
pismo/g4-550.
(runs testing with weekly update)

i have gotten boot hangs intermittently that indicated
to
me correctly that the combo drive needed reseating.
however yesterday it was hanging at usb, but
apparently the
same issue. also in macos i had my firewire connection
hanging,
was obsessing over that cables/connectors could be bad
until
i recalled this.

on my old world powerbook i recently reported hangs on
scsi.
it ocurrs to me that there i have a dummy module that
is sometimes in the cd compartment. i would perhaps go
and
put this back in and see if that hanging goes away.
before
i reported that i would try rebooting cold rather than
from
within the bootx control panel - that is the way bootx
as
i understand gives you two means of boot, as startup
using
extension which loads early so bypassing possible
xtension conflict.
yes, well it seems to work but it could be cd as much
as anything,
not necessarily a fancy extension. anyway i realize i
am not
so fond of rebooting, but now come to think of it i
have
recently noticed that the cd did not click when i put
it in
so much as once did - perhaps that is why i stopped
interchanging
with the dummy thing. but moving these laptops around
i
found in the pismo it easily comes dis-seated.

anyway, anybody else please share if you have had
experiences of this kind. everybody always would dump
on scsi interference but apparently i wonder if pci
can also
cause such. since i don't use the combo that much
i could either put a battery or a dummy in pismo right
side
if i got something - thus force me to seat the drive
prior
to using it. [true enough, tho on my beige g3 after
replacing
some old scsci stuff finally got this 10/100 pci card
to
working that wasn't even supposed to work at all (this
is not yet in debian but i hope soon)]

btw please tell me if firewire is really a separate
bus from
pci. why did my pismo think in debian that it was
scsci and
be extremely slow - is that due to change. i wish i
had a
way to make backup, even if i have not figured how to
boot off it yet at least on my old world powerbook i
have a backup on scsi - which i could copy back with
parted from an emergency boot cd if my disk died.
(btw - this means right now debian install cd for ow.
for nw i can use a gentoo live cd; have used these for
resizing and when i oops the kernel update - or even
to
create the backup in the first place)

am putting a lot of work into these systems, don't
feel
like starting over. have to take care of them well.

oftentimes i think there is a gap in debian that needs
closing; would like more discussion on this already
high
traffic list regards having to set up and maintain
"stable"
development platforms here on powerpc. you know what
i am saying, i hope, i am trying to get involved in
package
development as representing powerpc, with adequate
self
respect about it. i also know its a busy time, next
year
should be easier ???
