You have the firmware installed? On Debian sid; install linux-wlan-ng-firmware
and run the containing script. Then install the resulting deb. If you
compiled it yourself; well, get it installed...

Weird. At least here it shows stuff although you can't use iwconfig to
check it. That indicates to me that the card/driver isn't really
initalized...
