Well, as long as I remember, there is a linuxPPC version of Real Player (at least, there was last year). If you can live without text search and hyperlinks in PDF you have tons of alternatives to Acroread.

If you're looking for desktop, and want my advice, Apple machines are very polished and good looking. And OSX is a great desktop too.
