Did you build that kernel yourself? If so, I'm guessing you didn't build support for the Airport card into your kernel. Try doing 'modprobe airport', and see if the module loads. If not, you need to go into 'Networking devices/Wireless networking (non-hamradio)' and enable the Hermes and Orinoco drivers. One of the options under them, once they're enabled, will be for Apple Airport support.

Yes, this is the eth1394 driver at work.
