Hey,

as i got the same problem with the nVidia Card (becoming stuck at openpic) 
i give you my PCIID:

for me i did not try any rivafb patches as you told they are just for 
console<->X11 switching. When there is the possibility to make rivafb work 
with some patches, i would like to try.
