Derrik,

Can you tell us where the syntax and semantics for this stuff is
documented -- what one puts after "boot" in talking to Open
Firmware, and how it interacts with the related environment
variables?

I would add that the documentation appears to be wrong on this.

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/powerpc/ch-rescue-boot.en.html

Yes, that documentation is out-of-date and often just-plain-wrong. Frequently, the i386 version bleeds over into the PowerPC sections -- probably because there isn't any good PPC documentation to take it's place.

Re-writing the PPC-speccific portion is a project that I'd love to have the time to undertake. I'm currently trying to gather background knowledge and suggestions for when I finally do get into it. That's why I asked Derrik if he had any pointers to useful documentation.

All pointers gratefully accepted!

Rick
