Ah, sorry.  The original post asked for a 2.6 kernel specifically, so
I only gave those options, but snipped his question referring to 2.6.
Anyway.

In 2.4, you need

CONFIG_MAC_SERIAL=y
CONFIG_SERIAL=y
CONFIG_SERIAL_CONSOLE=y
