eth0 and kernel 2.6.7

i am running sarge on an g3 newworld powerbook and with a standard debian 2.4.26-powerpc-pmac kernel almost everything is fine. but when i want to upgrade to a 2.6.7-powerpc kernel, my network is not recognised anymore :

the same happens with the 2.4.26-powerpc-small-pmac kernel. am i right and this kernel is also one for me, but smller than the normal because of initrd ? and can it be, that it is the fault of the initrd ? following the discussion on this list i installed discover1, but it did not help ...
