newbie XF86Config G4 867

Hi,

I've been working on configuring XFree86 for a couple of days, now. I keep
getting "fatal error: no screens found." I'm still a bit unsure, as there's
more than one config tool (eg, dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86,
xf86config), and more than one config file - /etc/X11/XF86Config-4,
/root/XF86Config.new (at this point I'm assuming that the important file (on
my system) is /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 based on reading the
/var/log/XFree86.0.log and man XF86Config-4. Is the /root file intended to
replace the /etc/X11 file, or is it for the root user's use or something
else? (I tried replacing, just for the heck of it, and a bunch of other
stuff, but so far, nothing has worked.)

If I can't get a solution, I'll keep mucking around, trying to figure out
where, for instance, dpkg-reconfigure writes the file (xf66config is much
more explicit about this) and messing around with some of the settings,
trying different config files/locations (according to "man XF86Config-4"),
etc..

Anyway, I feel ready on this one to post to the list. This has been a really
good *nix newbie learning experience, and I'd just continue if I wasn't
starting to get burnout/run out of ideas. To be quite honest, I'm glad X
didn't work right off, though. :)

[SIDE NOTE: I'm learning, as it was sorely required, to send mail from bash.
I got it to send mail to my GF, but not to my email (sbcglobal.net) address.
I've experimented enough (same cmd, differrent address) to suspect there's
some block on my email (though nothing I did). I had to send these files to
her and then forward them back to me, go into OSX and retrieve them to
assemble this mail. Anyone have any idea why I can't send myself mail?
Anyone know of a good howto on mail? I've read a few that weren't too
helpful (e.g. AT&T network manual), and the man pages (while useful) are
still a bit cryptic and sparse for me.]

At this point, I'm guessing that the BusID for the video card is wrong, but
neither Apple System Profiler nor lspci made it very clear what the ID is in
0:0:0 format. Googling didn't help much either.

I also wouldn't mind if someone sent me a working XF86Confi-4 file for a G4
867 (single), NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, so I can check it out.

Anyway, if anyone is willing to help me work this out, I've included the
following files, in order:

[1] /etc/X11/XFree86.0.log

[2] the original /root/XF86Config.new file (currently /root/XF86Config.old)

[3] an XF86Config file generated from xf86config (currently
/root/XF86Config.new)

[4] The /etc/X11XF86Config-4 file

NOTE: My configurations, I think, wrote over the original
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file before I'd made a backup, as, despite reading
manuals, etc. I didn't know what I was doing when I started this [my first
debian installation]. I needed to get my hands dirty to start
understanding.)

Any help would be much appreciated,

Jon
