Re: Installing on a dual G5

The 2.4.25 kernel image builds in the archive don't include a power4 SMP
kernel, or if they do they don't advertise it as such.

Well, the power4 2.4.25 kernel is the SMP version, if i remember well.
Since each build represented 1 hour on my box, i did make only one

Well, if it is the SMP version, the image containing it still doesn't boot my dual G5. However, I don't know if that's the kernel's fault or not -- it's an OF error and I am guessing that it occurs near the end of yaboot rather than early in the kernel. So, for all I know, the bug could be in yaboot.

The 2.6.6 kernel image builds in the archive do include an SMP kernel,
which we currently aren't using. Is it safe to use this for all power4
systems?

Yep, but represent a 20-40 or so performance hit on uniprocessor system,
at least that is what benh claimed, see previous threads on this.

It's not clear to me from this thread whether the non-SMP kernel is supposed to work on MP machines. As far as the installer is concerned, either the kernel on the installer image should be able to boot both kinds of G5 machines, or there should be two G5 kernels. If I have an installer CD that boots my machine, I can easily install a faster kernel later; as it stands (and again, I am not sure this is the kernel's fault), I have an install CD that doesn't boot, so I am SOL. I am willing to spend some time helping sort this out, FWIW.
