Current benh-kernel fails to boot (after clock) on iBook G4

Hello,
I am new to PPC, so please excuse if these are FAQs, but I searched
the archive and could not find the answers. I use a new iBook G4.

I got the latest benh-kernel by rsync and build the kernel using
make-kpkg. As described in the archive, I had to touch
arch/ppc/boot/images/vmlinux.coff and
arch/ppc/boot/images/vmlinux.coff-2.4.25-ben1
(I used http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2004/04/msg00305.html).
After installing, I have the following files in /boot:

insgesamt 12457
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 26885 2004-05-08 16:15 config-2.4.25-ben1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 38996 2004-04-14 15:36 config-2.4.25-powerpc
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1024 2003-10-23 07:29 first.b

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 617176 2004-05-08 16:50 System.map-2.4.25-ben1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 768784 2004-04-14 16:26 System.map-2.4.25-powerpc
lrwxr-xr-x    1 root     root           19 2004-05-07 16:14 vmlinux -> vmlinux-2.4.25-ben1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3654898 2004-05-08 16:50 vmlinux-2.4.25-ben1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5446643 2004-04-14 16:26 vmlinux-2.4.25-powerpc
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2004-05-08 16:50 vmlinux.coff-2.4.25-ben1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2095032 2004-04-14 16:26 vmlinux.coff-2.4.25-powerpc

Is this normal? (i.e. vmlinux AND an empty vmlinux.coff-2.4.25-ben1 ??).

I made a bug-report about the build-problem: #247850

I boot the kernel, and it stops at:
VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly.
Freeing unused kernel memory: 172k init 4k chrp 8k prep
INIT: version 2.85 booting
Loading /etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz
Activating swap.

Real Time Clock Driver v1.10f

The kernel supplied by Debian shows at this part:
VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly.
Freeing unused kernel memory: 208k init 8k chrp 36k prep
INIT: version 2.85 booting
Loading /etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz
Activating swap.

Setting the System Clock using the Hardware Clock as reference...

then it detects the logical volumes, complains about the CD-ROM (some
Illegal request).

I can post my complete .config or other information if needed. Thanks
for pointers to fine manuals or hints where to look at.

Greetings
