This problem occurs in sid (I assume you use that too) on i386 too, 
the problem is most of the time the difference in gcc version mozilla/galeon
and the blackdown Java are compiled with.
I've build blackdown Java 1.4 for i386 with gcc 3.3 and everything seems working.

I followed the steps on

It might be adapted to use
ftp://ftp.easynet.be/blackdown/JDK-1.3.1/ppc/FCS-02c/j2re-1.3.1-02c-FCS-linux-ppc.bin
I don't know what FCS is and with what gcc version it is compiled.
Binary-only distribution _IS_ a problem :)
