In short:
"On Linux, Mozilla requires JRE 1.4.2 or later." They're talking about
the x86 Linux.
<http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/java.html>

Details:
It didn't work: Neither the IBM stuff nor the Blackdown one gave me a
working Java environment for Mozilla 1.5
(Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux ppc; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031024 Debian/1.5-2)

IBMJava2-JRE-141.tgz didn't work:
I linked /opt/IBMJava2-141/jre/bin/libjavaplugin_oji.so to the Mozilla
plugin folder, IIRC

The Blackdown stuff, currently:
java version "1.3.1"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build Blackdown-1.3.1-02b-FCS)
Classic VM (build Blackdown-1.3.1-02b-FCS, native threads, nojit)

Installed:
j2re1.3        1.3.1.02b-2    Blackdown Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, St
j2se-common 1.1 Common facilities for all Java2 Standard Edi
java-common 0.22 Base of all Java packages

There still would be a possibility to install the .bin version of the
Blackdown ppc package instead of the .deb packages: But
according to
<ftp://sunsite.dk/mirrors/java-linux/JDK-1.3.1/ppc/FCS-02b/INSTALL-j2re>
these are based on the same software, if I understand correctly.

So I'll give up now.

Thanks to all those, who were helping, for your time ...

Best Regards,
Wolfgang
