ok, but still I don't understand how a perfectly working installation
stopped working suddenly...

and BTW, how can I upgrade to a new kernel given that when I boot with the
old kernel (and init=/bin/sh to get the shell)
a) I can't access the MACOSX partition
b) I can't access the network
?

I guess I'd have to burn a bootable CD... provided I'm able to access the
CD...
