Thanks for the suggestion. I don't know whether it was this or the fact
that I changed the run_tests configuration to disable accounting
(although CONFIG_BSD_PROCESS_ACCT is enabled in the kernel, or is that
unrelated?), but things seem to look much better now:

I'd also like to thank Mats D. Wichmann and Matt Taggart for their
suggestions on how to investigate the problems, I hope I'll find the
time to follow at least some of them at some point.
