alsa help

Hi all,

Please, i need some help to have alsa give me some sound on my
Pismo/2.4.21-ben2/unstable
Alsa is compiled, i have sound with esd (gnome), but i cannot play a mp3
file with xmms : 
"error opening alsa device"
"impossible to open audio, check output plugin..."

Output plugin is ALSA 0.9 libALSA.so
user defined: audio; mixer card:0; mixer device: PCM

The alsa lists focuse on pc sound cards, and i found no helpful man for
ppc.
