Hi Simon,sometimes the X sistem works but wrong resolution/settings prevent you seeing anything on the screen. I suspect this might be your case as otherwise you would be getting some error messages from the xserver. Try change the resolution with contro-alt and +/- (the plus or minus on your keyboard) and see what happens.
