Thanks everyone (Michel, Rogerio, Ajay, Claas etc).
The good news is that the problem is solved. Unfortunately as I tried
all the suggestions (adding local2.none to the list of items
to be logged to /etc/var/log/messages and /etc/var/log/syslog in 
/etc/syslog.conf and changing the init string via ppp.config) i'm
not totally sure what worked.  
Now for the next hurdle :finding a french-canadian ibook keyboard map
and figuring out why switching to ben_kernel 2.4.21-pre6 kills usb
(mouse/keyboard) support and diald.
