I also have a Macintosh PPC 4400 - I'm running mostly
Woody +
some packages from testing, and sometimes Mac OS 7.5.3
on it ;-).
Kernel 2.4.18 homebrew.
I have X running 15 bpp - 640x 480 (the Apple-screen I
got only gets
to this resolution)
But I do remember that I also had trouble getting the
screen right, I
had to fiddle around abit, yeah, a long while back...
Eventually I got it as in this screenshot :

I boot wih BootX, option novideo.
Please find my XF86Config-4 for version 4.1.0-16
downunder.
