you should then be able to use /dev/dsp1 to use the speakers.

well, if you run hotplug and hotplug initializes your speakers ok, then
you can write a script called /etc/hotplug/usb/audio which moves the
symlink /dev/dsp to /dev/dsp1 when you plug in the speakers, and back to
/dev/dsp0 when you unplug them.

you should read the hotplug documentation to find out more about this,
including the variables etc your scripts will need to interpret.  sorry
i don't have one running to share.
