I'm not aware of such an option, does it actually have an effect?

I guess the radeon driver would have to be fixed the same way as
radeonfb for this to work.

Well, it's probably coincidence that the second head still works from
the former run. :)

Probably you have set up xserver-common to only allow console users to
start the X server, and the process doesn't have a console tty as
controlling tty when forking?
