The cable is now definitely connected to the right serial port; I am now
getting output but it's too slow.  Bootargs are console=ttyS0,9600.  If
the cable was not, as you say, "full null modem", could that affect the
speed?

based on the 604e processor, not the POWER3.  Do you have a link to an
appropriate kernel image?
