No, playing DVDs is not OK, at least not with my 600MHz combo
iBook under testing, xine 0.9.8.
It skips about 15% to 20% of the frames, using X 4.1.0
(although, as Michel Daenzer mentioned, X 4.2.0 might be
better if DRI is enabled). Enabling DMA with hdparm is
absolutely essential for playing DVDs with my iBook.
With macosx, the DVD player is not much better (I mean
smoother) and it apparently is not able to do de-interlacing.

I don't, because I only have two DVDs and both are
unencrypted. I'd expect xine, mplayer and co to be skipping
even more frames than what I reported above with encrypted
DVDs.
BTW, I patched my DVD drive to be RPC-1.
