Depair: Help for installing Woody on an ibook (M8587) needed - LONG
Hi all!
I bought an ibook (M8597) last week intending to install Woody solely
;-).
I installed a minimal system with Woody's rescue-discs. As you know,
this installation has a working 2.2.20-pmac kernel with it.
For further installing (I just own a 56k-modem) I tried to get
connected via my working Woody/G4 without success since two days.
As I run Woody with my G4 and a 2.4.18-ben0 I tried to compile it for
my ibook as well to rule out any problems with new hardware ?-/.
Nope - I tried a lot of different settings resulting all in a
kernel-panic. =8-(
Last I see is something concerning NET 4.
Therefore I would peg somebody out here with a working 2.4.18 or
similar on a recent ibook (500) to send me her's/his' config-xxx, cause
I don't find my error(s).
Despite that, there seems to be a problem in recognizing the
ethernet-card correctly with my config. (GMAC=y, lastly BMAC=y)
I'm able to ping from my G4 to the ibook but not from the
ibook(192.168.1.10) to the G4 (192.168.1.1) via eth0.
Here I found following dmesg with the ibook/2.2.20:
-----snip-------
.....
eth0: GMAC at 00:03:93:77:15:de, driver v1.3k2
3c59x.c 18Feb01 Donald Becker and others http://www.scykd.com/....

eth0: Warning ! Unknown PHY ID 0x004061e4 !
Link state change, pyh_status: 0x782d

----snap------
What does that warning mean?
On my ibook
ifconfig eth0 gives the following:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00.03:93:77:15:DE

ping results in 100% loss (-((.
I didn't find anything about GMAC in the Ethernet-HOWTO. In the
Apple-Developer-Notes I couldn't see any difference between ibooks
Oct01 and Jan02.
So I'm absolutely clueless how to install my ibook.
Any hints, recommendations, readings, help would be phantastic.
Thanks for your patience & help and have a good time
