oh, ok. i thought they were the same thing. btw, just a few seconds ago,
i tried a couple of commands found on a SuSE website, and got it to
work. :D weird things is, with the same commands, several weeks or a
couple of months ago, same commands but it didn't work at all. i'm
thinking either the serial ports were somehow misconfigured (but the
config command should have tken care of that...), or since the printer
had been off, the os hadn't seen it on the "peripheral bus", so didn't
know it existed. but then i had rebooted, and it did the same (not work). <shrug> 

oh well, regardless, now to go on linuxprinting.org and figure out which
driver to use.
