Maybe you need some boot parameters. The mode parameter clears up this
kind of difficulty on ATI adapters. Might be something like

video=matrox:vesa=0x101

or 

video=matrox:vmode=6

(Purely guessing at the numbers; check out
Documentation/fb/matroxfb.txt in the kernel source.)
