I forgot to mention that I can't use an older kernel (presuming you
mean 2.2), because neither sound nor X will work on a TiBook with 2.2
AFAIK, which pretty much precludes running XMMS :)

And I don't see a newer glibc available for powerpc...

But I can confirm that it works for me with the Esound daemon, but not
with OSS.  Hm.
