yup the kernel is broken, you must have CONFIG_PPC_RTC=y and
CONFIG_RTC=n for it to work, having both modules probably just results
in the CONFIG_RTC one being loaded.  i don't know if there is any
powerpc varient that needs CONFIG_RTC instead of CONFIG_PPC_RTC, if
there is then the solution is unclear and probably complicated.

could be, if you don't have a printer you certainly don't need another
daemon running as root.
