I have that same mouse, but I don't use gpm.  Hopefully David's advice
about using /dev/input/mice will work.

Sure.  Just do:

rm /etc/rc2.d/S99gdm

Since 2 is the default runlevel, this will prevent GDM from starting
up by default.
