You can look at /etc/X11/XF86Config.  This is where the mouse is specified.
You probably want to specify that it use the mouse device /dev/input/mice
and the protocol imps2, but I'm at work and my home computer is off, so I
can't check.

You could probably do this with `apt-get remove xdm gdm kdm`, since it's
probably one of those that is starting up in the beginning.  Of course,
this would be overkill since it would remove those programs from your
system.  But this might be reasonable if you want to use startx to start
X.

Also, you could just get a console by typing ctrl-cmd-Fn (where Fn is
anything from F1 to F6).  You can get back to X with ctrl-cmd-F7.  cmd here
is the apple key with the cloverleaf on it.
