I wasn't aware the benh's tree was set up as a kernel-source
package. Is it?

It works for me too.

Hey, let's keep these discussions civil, OK? But seriously, if you
need your machine to be running, why do you want to mess with 2.4?
Is there something that you need that only 2.4 can provide? You
already seem to know the rule "Don't fix what ain't broken." But if
you really must have 2.4 ... actually that last error message MIGHT
indicate the benh's tree is in flux right at the moment. Did you
try rsync'ing it again to pick up any changes?
