800x600 16 bpp would be just fine.
I have tried to add a
modes "800x600"
line in XF86config, but that was definetly not the way to do it. On my laptop I
have a graphic card which is not entirely compatible with xfree so I have
played around with XF86config a million time - so it surprises me that I find
it difficult.
And I can't find Xconfigurator for debian ppc (might be because of my
ineptitude with the apt-system)
could you send me the corresponding section from your XF86conf? - please

When I get it working I will try to install xfree 4.0.x - but I have other
things on my mind rigth now - like finding a browser that is not mozilla and
figuring out hiw to add an apt-site.
