But the debian/rules file created by make-kpkg is supposed to take a
look at the sub architecture and use that as the target. So, because I'm
building on a Power Mac, it shouldn't build the .coff file, which is of
no use in this case.

True. But make-kpkg should not try to build a .coff on the Pmac subarch.
