What version of BootX are you running?  I had the same problem on a G3
Powerbook running MacOS 9.  The nearest I can figure, BootX 1.1.3 is
incompatible with MacOS 9 and/or systems w/ ATA/IDE disks.  I got BootX
1.2b3 and things worked fine.
