I'm willing to believe that the Debian kernel is broken, but
there's really no need to search out Paul or Ben's trees -- the
official kernel compiles and works just fine on PowerPC, and more
specifically on 7200 PowerMacs. My PowerCenter 132 (PowerMac
clone based on the same Catalyst motherboard as the 7200) works
fine. I'm currently running the last Alan Cox prerelease:

Linux diziet 2.2.15pre5-mrcuts #1 Thu Jan 27 16:10:04 PST 2000 ppc unknown

It works fine.

I've actually seen some problems with the other trees -- it seems
like work is being done to support the ``newworld'' Macs that
breaks support for older machines.

Also, if the Debian kernel *isn't* broken, be aware that we had
major problems installing Debian on my machine because the /dev
directory (from the ca. June, 1999, base.tar.gz) only had support
for two or three SCSI devices. I have two SCSI hard disks in the
machine (both MacOS), an internal SCSI CD-ROM drive, and am
running Linux on an external SCSI drive -- since there was no
device matching the external drive, we were able to copy device
files from LinuxPPC to get us started (later we rebuilt them all).

   C.
