getting a kernel to recognize scsi on a ppc 7200

for the past month ive been trying to get various dists of debian ppc
to properly boot on a ppc 7200. every time that i boot the kernel
(ive tried sid and potato) it doesnt recognize the scsi device. as you
probably know its pretty hard to install the base os without a disk.
ive run out of ideas. ivr tried changing the scsi id of the disk, although
i dont know what good this would do because it doesnt even seem to see the
scsi bus. i just cant figure out how to make the darn thing work.
