I'm not quite sure how you came up with the idea that the information
has to come from d-i.  I sure did not say it, nor did I mean it.

My point is that the subarch information should not come from the
popularity-contest package.  I do not really care if it comes from
d-i, dpkg, gcc, dmidecode, lspci, or whatever.  It would be nice if it
came from a package already installed on all systems, to avoid
introducing a new dependency, though.
