I'm not saying I'm a sed guru, but
: tfheen@arabella ~ > echo ABCD | tr A-Z a-z
abcd
: tfheen@arabella ~ > echo ABCD | sed 'y/A-Z/a-z/'
aBCD
doesn't seem to do the same at all for me.
