I think the original plan we worked out together on this list a while ago
works well enough for now (at least until Wichert comes to reworking the way
arches are handled by dpkg).

Actually, RMS is concerned about the _GNU_TYPEs (and _GNU_SYSTEM of course),
nothing else. Note that the Debian arch names don't even have "linux" in
them, they are i386 and hurd-i386, which is bad enough :) Anyway, this can
be rectified when arch handling is reworked in dpkg.
For dpkg-architecture, fixing the GNU names is good enough.
