Yes, this is the Right Way (tm). It should be similar for patented problematic
software as well. 

Install Gimp. 
"The package gimp requires the package gimp-non-free to use gif and tiff files
because of [insert information about software patents here] Do you want to
retrieve it from a country free of patent problems? (Y/N)"
