There are two different problems here: 1 - going back to a previous step in the configuration of a single package. This would make the configmodule for packages a lot more complex 2 - going back to a previous package should not be that hard, just call the configmodule again. Of course the ultimate solution would be to have a language in which you can formulate the decision process. Something like prolog would be suitable I guess. I think that would be a too large step to implement at once though.
