Well, I examined the behavior a bit more closely.  What happens is that
the tool tip remains indefinitely, even when the mouse is moved, until
the mouse cursor is moved over the box of the tip, and then moved away,
at which point the tip vanishes.  I hadn't realized that, since the
cursor generally isn't quite over the box to begin with.

Thanks for taking the trouble to verify, but I assure you that that's
what I see here ;)

Okay, I installed openoffice.org-gtk, and that seems to eliminate the
problem totally.  Now OO's tool tips go away promptly, like those of
other applications.
