It was 1.1.x, installed as usual via apt-get. The likely source of any oddness
would be a system upgrade from sarge to sid, which was previously done. OOo
_was_  working after that upgrade.

I'm not exactly sure, but I think it was 1.1.1

Tarred my user ~/.openoffice then deleted the original, renamed ~/.sversionrc.
Still same error run as user and as root.
(/root/.openoffice and /root/.sversionrc do not exist)

-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root 13540 Nov 30 19:10 /usr/bin/openoffice
MD5 sum: f1bcc5cf68e6204f1044abc59a0913d2

In that file, lines 25-27, I have:

# this string should be exactly as in ~/.sversionrc
OOVERSION="OpenOffice.org 1.1.3"
VER=

Is that correct?
In particular, should $VER be null?
