Did you try starting OOo from the console?  I guess you may see a message
like the one in this bugreport:

If not, can you try to reproduce this with a non-Debian build, ie download
a binary install .tar.gz from openoffice.org and do a single user install
and try to reproduce.  It would also be helpful to know if this problem
exists in 1.1, which you could test for us if you have the download
bandwidth.  We only have 1.1 unstable builds for ppc so you'll need to use a
.tar.gz installation if you don't want the unstable libraries on your
machine.
