Until gcc-defaults is changed to point to gcc-6, you would need to build with CC=gcc-6 CXX=g++-6 F77=gfortran-6.

The upstream hg repo now builds against HDF5 1.10, I have successfully built it against both gcc-6/unstable and hdf5/experimental.

FTR, building against GCC 6 is expected to work with rev aab79a1885cc or later, and against HDF5 1.10 with rev 5c949eecb6dd or later.

Great. I am preparing now the release of version 4.0.3 to unstable. After it is done, I will release a version for experimental based on the Mercurial sources.
