The libhdf5-dev package has version 1.10.0-patch1+docs-1~exp in experimental while, in unstable, it has version 1.8.16+docs-8. Something changed between these versions that make Octave FTBFS.

Maybe am I missing something, but I don't understand why the hdf5 version in experimental might be a problem. If we upload octave to experimental, it will be built against the version of hdf5 in *unstable* (unless we explicitly require the version in experimental by tightening the build dependency).

The goal to upload the octave package to experimental was to get it built against gcc 6. If, indeed as you say, it will be built against the gcc in unstable, then the exercise is moot.

At any rate, I tried to build the package inside an experimental chroot, against gcc 6 and HDF5 1.10
